Obituary Pictures

Being involved in the Newspaper industry and being in involved in production it seems only a natural progression. Unfortunately when a death occurs, families are not thinking about their loved ones last picture.
I have a sentiment  that I believe that as the person responsible for getting this last picture into print it is very important to strive for the best reproduction quality possible. The unfortunate part is that many submitted photos are less than desirable and in many cases it turns out that the person making the arrangements uses the picture that they have carried in their wallet for many years.
I have what I call my digital tool box, it contains various backgrounds, and many shin patches for extreme shadow areas as well as those high lights that have been blown out. I also have hair pieces and extra shoulders. Since most obits are published in black and white, I'm never concerned with matching color but I am concerned on matching tones. And with all newspaper functions these retouching are done in less than five minutes. Here are a few samples.

Added dimension to the face, brightened up the highlights and separated out the navy blue from the blacks.

Started with a very blurred picture. And the eyes were completely in shadow. Teeth were lost in the conversion to black and white.

Removed the man. Replaced the blinds. Added tone to the blown out highlights.

Reds were controlled for conversion to black and white. Removed the hot spots in the eyeglass area.

Nice picture but added dimensions to the hair and controlled the highlight tones.
